The Wissegg is one of the gentle, almost-overlooked crossings of the Appenzell hill country – a mere 1,054 metres, on the quiet road between Bühler and Trogen at the north foot of the Gäbris, set between the summits of the Hohe Buche to the west and the Gäbris to the east. Strictly it is an "Egg" rather than a true pass – the Swiss-German word for a step or terrace in the land, a name often found at such heights, which is why purists avoid calling it the "Wisseggpass" at all. It has no grand history; its reward is simply the view and the road. Yet it is the highest crossing of the pre-Alpine hills between the Stoss and St. Gallen, and its whole length runs through idyllic Appenzell pasture – the Säntis on the Bühler side, Lake Constance on the Trogen side. From Trogen the climb begins at the town's handsome, recently restored Landsgemeinde square. Cyclists treasure it as a little round-tour of Appenzell in miniature, lovelier and far quieter than the busy Stoss nearby.
