The Schufelberger Egg is another of the little green crossings of the Zürcher Oberland – a saddle at 990 metres in the commune of Hinwil, linking Wernetshausen with Gibswil, where the road cuts the ridge between the Bachtel, the area's beloved viewpoint hill, and the Hörnli. It is barely known, for it carries almost no traffic – which is exactly why cyclists love it, all the more so because it is closed to through-traffic on Sundays and holidays, and links neatly with the spur roads up to the Scheidegg and the Bachtel. From Gibswil the road climbs alongside the headwater streams of the Jona, through the hamlet of Schufelberg, to a summit marked simply by a picnic spot beneath a great beech, with a view reaching to the Pfäffikersee on one side and the Zürichsee on the other. It is sometimes also called the Bachtelsattel – though the truly fearsome Bachtel ramp lies on the far side – and it strings together easily with the neighbouring Ghöch and Hulftegg into a gentle afternoon's tour. No grand history here, simply one of the quiet pleasures of cycling this rolling, lake-flecked corner of Switzerland.
