DESCRIPTION
The Ornpass is one more of the gentle Zürcher Oberland crossings – a saddle at just 925 metres in the commune of Hinwil, on the southern flank of the Bachtel, linking Wernetshausen with Wald. The little hamlet of Orn sits right on the pass, with a welcome restaurant, and from the summit a side road branches north and climbs to the top of the Bachtel itself – at 1,115 metres the beloved viewpoint mountain of the region, crowned with its lookout tower. It has no real history to speak of; even its one curiosity has vanished – on the nearby Hochwacht hill once stood the "Bachtel ski jump", long since gone. What remains is a quiet, lightly trafficked road that cyclists thread into the web of little Oberland passes, dropping afterwards through green country toward Rapperswil and Lake Zürich. A modest hill crossing, valued for its calm and its views rather than its past.
