The Flüela Pass climbs to 2,383 metres between Davos and Susch in the Lower Engadine, one of the three paved high roads linking the Engadine with northern Graubünden, alongside the Julier and the Albula. The European watershed between the Atlantic and the Black Sea runs right across its summit. For centuries it was a hard mule-trade route: Davos farmers carried their goods and livestock south into the Lower Engadine, the Vintschgau and as far as Bozen, returning laden with the salt that was so prized in those days – until a road for horse-drawn post coaches was built over it in 1867. The Flüela Hospice still stands at the windswept summit.
For generations the road was kept open at great effort all winter long, but when the Vereina railway tunnel opened in 1999, the canton no longer wished to clear it in the snowy months – and a volunteer association, "Pro Flüela", was formed to keep part of it open. Today the Flüela feels more like a quiet, scenic destination road than a transit route. And one lovely tradition survives: every Tuesday in summer, a historic six-horse post coach still climbs from Davos-Platz to the Flüela Hospice and back, just as it did before the motor car.
