The Col de la Croix de Cœur is a wild high balcony at 2,173 metres, perched above Verbier in the Valais, linking the ski village of La Tzoumaz with the Val de Bagnes. It is no ancient trade route – there's no real through-traffic here – but a rough mountain road that winds up through forest and then across alpine pastures, its final stretch running on a gravel road that keeps cars at bay and rewards those who reach the top with a wonderful view over the Val de Bagnes and Verbier below. It sits in the heart of the 4 Vallées, threaded with ski runs in winter and mountain-bike trails in summer.
For road cyclists it is a monster of a climb: from the floor of the Valais it is roughly 22 kilometres and 1,700 metres of ascent at a steady 7–9%, the tarmac giving out near the top to leave the last stretch on dirt. And it has tasted real racing – the col has hosted the finale of the Tour des Stations, where champions like Cadel Evans, Primož Roglič and Alberto Contador have raced to the line. A gentle name, the "Cross of the Heart", for a climb that demands plenty of both.
